A river runs through it

After a week working in Minneapolis I came home to find that Grand Forks had changed considerably! It appears winter has returned and the forecast indicates more of the white stuff in a few days. Luckily the cold weather has slowed the rising of the Red River, which is about one block away. We can see the dike from our front door.

Saturday March 21st :

Saturday March 28th:
+ 12 inches of snow

The Red River continues to rise and is predicted to crest later this week at 51 feet. There are three bridges over the river, and the Kennedy bridge on the north end of town is the only one still open. The water is literally only a few feet below the bridge and vehicles have to wait in line to cross between Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

Saturday March 21st :
Sorlie Bridge near downtown where we live (still open for traffic).
Sunday March 28th:
Sorlie Bridge - Closed. It appears the bridge may be underwater on the East Grand Forks side.

This is how close the water is to the dike. The river is almost to the Greenway trail and when it isn't flooded, this area is actually a large park and trail system.

These are the steal plates that were put up to close the openings in the dike. This is the entrance to the Sorlie Bridge.
