It's that time of year again, when everyone starts to prepare for hibernation: you bury your nuts; turn on your furnace and smell that lovely odor of burnt dust; drop off your winter coat at the dry cleaners without emptying the pockets; and you begin accumulating fat stores to help you survive the long cold winter ahead. One of the best ways to add to your fat stores without feeling guilty is to use recipes that have fruit in them. Because it's a well known fact that if you add fruit to your dessert, the fruit automatically cancels out all the bad stuff. In fact, the benefits of a fruit dessert eating routine probably outweigh the benefits of an exercise routine. Don't get me wrong, you can do both in front of the TV, but wouldn't you prefer to be enjoying these instead?
Apple Bundles:
2 medium apples
1 tube refrigerated bread sticks
1 medium orange
1 Tbl butter melted
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1. Peel, core and slice apples
2. Separate dough to form 12 strips
3. Place 3-4 apple slices at the end of each strip of dough and roll up
4. Arrange bundles in deep dish (9 x13)
5. Zest orange and set aside
6. Juice orange to measure 1/3 cup (we typically use 1/2 c) and pour into bottom of dish, but not over bundles.
7. Brush melted butter over bundles
8. Mix zest, sugar, & cinnamon and sprinkle generously over bundles.
9. Bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes
10. Enjoy the bundle goodness.
